SUMMER 2009 WEEK 7 + POTW

POTW: My Cat
Nikon D50
18-70 f/3.5-4.5
SB-800

This picture is good because the catface fills up the whole frame. Her eyes are closed because she was blasted at with an on-camera SB-800 at full power.

This is what happens when nobody sends me a POTW submission.

20 Questions: Graham Hiscocks
The usual 20 questions style photo shoot, this time with a guy named Hiscocks.

Photographer: [ANDY FANG]

Woodwards, SFU Vancouver
We need a photo of the newly restored (or in progress) Woodward's building near SFU's Vancouver campus.

Photographer: [VACANT]

New Pub
SFU may be getting a new pub to compete with the Highland pub! It's probably going to be in Univercity or Cornerstone. Just a picture of Univercity or Cornerstone will do! A nice one though, please.

Photographer: [VACANT]

Travel Cliches
An article about what travel cliches really mean. Like when someone says they visited the poor neighborhoods and made them think about their own lifestyle, what they really mean is that they rode in an air conditioned taxi through a poor part of town on their way to the shopping centre. And more stuff like that!

Pretty Vanilla in Concert
It's been a while, so I decided I'm going to take this one. Pretty Vanilla (this weird glam-rock band) is performing at Pat's Pub on East Hastings in Vancouver at 9pm this Saturday.

SUMMER 2009 WEEK 6 + POTW: Fraser Nelson

This week's POTW comes from Fraser Nelson, who has proven himself to be an excellent photographer through Peak work such as the SFSS portrait session, the cover photo for the Arthur Erickson issue, and his coverage of the Sun Wizard concert.

In the shot, Fraser captured the dude making a jump right at the edge of the building's shadow. That was key in making the picture work as the light and dark parts split the frame in half (diagonally too, which adds a ton of interest) and provides some asymmetry to the composition. The fruit scooter was then lit by the bit of sunlight shining over the building, and it really makes the subject pop out. The timing was also right on, obviously.

Camera: Pentax K10D
Lens: 18-55 f/3.5-5.6
Focal Length: 18mm
Aperture: f/5.6
Shutter speed: 1/1500
ISO: 400

Great shot, Fraser!

Peak Assignments for the Week 6 Issue

--NEWS--
Louis Riel House Sucks
Residents of Louis Riel house suffer increasing rents while the building conditions continue to plummet.

Photographer: [VACANT]

uPass Fraud
About how people sign up for courses only to drop them when they received their uPasses in the mail. This might make cover this week. We're thinking photo illustration (of a U-Pass I guess), or a bus, or a guy stealing transfers, or something. Let me know if you're thinking of something entirely different.

Photographer: [VACANT]

Convocation
Convocations ceremonies this week. Not doing anything overly large on convo this time around, but we'll definitely publish some good shots from the events if we get them.

Photographer: [FRASER NELSON]

Making the AQ Pond Sustainable
A follow-up to this story previously featured in The Peak.
Just your best picture of the AQ pond would do, even better if it expresses the concept of sustainability.

Photographer: [VACANT]

20 Questions Portraits
We will continue the theme of "outdoor commercial action shots" for this week, and hopefully we get someone good!

Photographer: [ANDY FANG + ]

Whoa! Just realized it's all news so far this week. The features articles are basically done since one is about a girl's trip through the Maritimes (where she took hundreds of photos), and the other about The Sims. We MAY have some arts stuff (bands and concerts) later in the month, I will keep you posted!

POTW: Steve Fan

The Photo of the Week this time is by long-time photographer Steve Fan. He shot this while on vacation in Hawaii, but never got a chance to talk with the subject.

"He's a surfer. He stood there, watching for waves and tried to catch it, for hours!"

Along with having great color, this photo uses the rule of 3rds really well. Shooting vertically was very effective since it puts the surfer in perspective with the big blue sky. The inclusion of the birds in the frame is great as it takes the readers' eyes from the surfer to the distant horizon, and finally to the vast blue sky.

Camera: Canon 30D
Lens: 17-50 f/2.8
Focal length: 17mm
Aperture: f/2.8
Shutter speed: 1/80th sec
ISO: 400

Great shot, Steve!

SUMMER 2009 WEEK 5

NEWS
----------

20 Questions - Andrew Fergusson
Will schedule a 20 questions portrait session with Andrew Fergusson on Friday around 12:00-12:30. Let me know if you'd like to partake!

Photographer: [ANDY FANG +]

Louie Riel House Sucks
Resident are concerned with the upcoming rent increases in the Louis Riel building despite declining building maintenance and lack of renovations. This is the one where students with kids live in, so it sucks that the children have to sleep with rats. Perhaps get a photo with the Louis Riel house looking really nasty!!! (not hard to do).

Photographer: [VACANT]

FEATURES
---------------

Arthur Erickson - The life and recent death of SFU's famed architect.
This is a piece about the guy and his work. We need some photos of the campus!!!! Or anything you think is cool and has stuff to do with Arthur Erickson and/or architecture.
(Also, this will probably make the cover, so make it good!)

Photos of the Weeks!

OK so I've neglected to post the POTWs in large format for the first two weeks. So here they are!

This first one is by Jenny Waters, winner of the 2009 Spring Semester Peakie Award! She took this photo with her D90 kit at the Abbot St. Courtyard over her semester break. The lines, patterns, and texture really make the shot pop. Plus works great in black & white!

Made with:
Camera: Nikon D90
Lens: 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6
Focal Length: 21mm
Aperture priority mode: f/3.8
ISO 1000

This second one is by Maia Britt Odegaard, who is also the Peak copy editor. Every single word in the newspaper is read 3 times by Maia to ensure correct grammar and fact checking. She's also an avid photographer! Her shot of the train has the same adventurous qualities in composition as well as subject matter. Good shot, Maia!

Made with:
Camera: Sony DSC-H50
Focal Length: 6.3mm
Aperture: f/4
ISO 100

Also wanted to give a shout-out to the two photo clubs on campus: Viewfinder and UPhoto. It's about time photographers had some clubs on campus! The Peak is a fantastic gateway to networking and potential client opportunities with each assignment. We can get you press passes for big events, opportunities to meet potential future clients, and publicity for your photography! Feel free to give subjects your personal business cards after a shoot. The rights to the photos remain yours, and you get credit in print as well as online. If you know any photographers who would be interested in shooting for The Peak, show them this blog!

We also do photo workshops to help our photographers grow and learn different styles of photography. Our last workshop was the Studio Lighting Workshop, click the link to see a video made by photography Cedric Yu.

See you around!
