20 Questions Portrait Series - Joe Zelezny (Treasurer)

The second installment of the creative portrait series, "20 questions with" lets us get inside the head of SFSS elected Treasurer Joe Zelezny. The series is a great way for photographers like yourself to get portrait experience with willing individuals, and get your work published! Joe's schedule for the week is a little strange, so if anybody is free before or after 8PM for a photo shoot with the treasurer, this is one opportunity for you!

SFU Pocket Farmer's Market

Simon Fraser University's Pocket Farmer's Market will be back in the summer by popular demand! It's a great place to get premium quality, healthy and local produce at a good price. The actual market opening is next Monday (too late for our deadline), but there's a lot of potential for a photo illustration to accompany this story. Stacey had the idea of arranging some colorful fruits and vegetables to resemble the earth, expressing the environmental benefits of shopping organic and local produce.

that was a quick break...

It's the week before classes. As students hustle around SFU's three campuses to purchase and barter books, look for classes, and beg professors for grade changes from the Spring, we at The Peak are already working on the premiere issue of the summer. With its (somewhat) predictable weather and easy-going atmosphere on campus, summer is the best time to improve upon our craft. The Peak is one of the only Canadian student newspapers to run during the summer, so why not take advantage of it! Use the Peak this summer to learn, explore, and network your photography to a wide range of audiences in Vancouver and around the province. All at no cost to you.

The image speaks for itself, as it shows the massive outburst of emotion that took place after the final tally, as well as the modest character of Ada Nadison as she covers her face in flattered embarrassment.

WORKSHOP + PHOTOSHOOT: STUDIO LIGHTING

It's finally time to do our long awaited studio lighting workshop! Learn the basic and advanced skills needed to properly light a photograph in a hands-on workshop format, with explicit focus on the industry of fashion and beauty photography on Tuesday, as well as a photo shoot with a model and team of stylists on Thursday. If you've never tried fashion photography before then this will be a treat for you! Our excellent team will pretty much guarantee epic photos for your port.

Things you will need for both events:

-An SLR camera and lens (better to have your own, but the Peak camera is also available)

-Jacket just in case it's nice enough to shoot outdoors

It is highly recommended to attend both events, as they are complementary to each other. If you can only make one event I can try to fill you in on what you missed, but please do your best to come to both, as they will both be equally good.

SFSS Election results

We will be setting up some portraits of the newly elected SFSS Board of Directors this Friday afternoon, and any help will be appreciated! It's also a good time to get some practice with portraiture, which is what we'll be doing at the workshop next Thursday!

Roller derby

There will be a feature on the sport of roller derby in Vancouver, and we will set up a photoshoot thursday (today) with 5 SFU students who are also active members of the roller derby community. Hulk smash!

Earth Hour

Earth Hour is on Saturday March 28th, and at 8:30pm, the world will go dark. Along with global landmarks like the golden gate bridge, sydney opera house, and times square, SFU will be doing its own part in contributing by turning down its energy consumption for one hour. A photo illustration will do for this! Perhaps photoshopping an old cityscape photo of yours so that all the buildings are dark? Or maybe taking a photo of a light bulb and inverting the colors to imply "off-ness"?

The theory behind procrastination

Vanessa Woznow is writing an investigative article on what procrastination is and how it happens. Perhaps an interesting photo for this piece would be of a book in a trash can! Or maybe a picture of a book lying on the grass, with a person frolicking in the background? Or simply a close-up of someone's eye with the reflection of Facebook seen inside it? So many directions!

POTW: Kevin Wu

This week's Photo of the Week is the first portrait featured as POTW, and it's quite a shot! Photographer Kevin Wu, while on a solo photo walk in downtown Vancouver, stumbled upon a familiar face he had seen on a frequented online forum. After chatting with "Baby" for a while and treating him to a meal, Kevin politely asked permission to snap a few, and ended up with this portrait among others. The streets of Vancouver are filled with different characters rich and poor, but with the right eye and attitude it's easy to see, as Kevin has shown with this piece, that beauty is ubiquitous.
